“Zarafa: The Burning Giraffe,” sculpture is my homage to Salvador Dali paintings of burning giraffes. I named the piece after the first giraffe brought to France in 1825. Her name was “Zarafa,” or giraffe in Arabic, and her eponymous biography is a must read, by Michael Allin. I presented my first ever Fire Sculpture, “Zarafa” at Burning Man 2009. I designed and built my first large scale steel public art piece, “The Dragon,” as a fire sculpture back in the 1980’s. But I was unable to get permission to install a giant propane jet inside it from the City of Boulder, Colorado. Thus making an actual fire sculpture was a long time coming. Black Rock City was great to work with and many thanks to all who helped out at the ARTery and keep “Zarafa” properly maintained and supervised with “Flame-On” at Burning Man 2009. The overwhelming and wonderful response from “Zarafa’s,” crowds of fans was a lovely surprise to say the least. Thanks to everyone who helped make the re-born “Zarafa,” be a smashing success!

“Zarafa: The Burning Giraffe,” 2009
14ft tall steel giraffe with flaming mane made of seven propane jets. Originally built in Mexico, Ringsby found the severely damaged sculpture in a junk yard with a badly broken neck and imagined how to rebuild it with flame effects and a detachable head for transportation across the country from Wyoming to Black Rock City, Nevada and back. It was remade, repaired and re-welded in Laramie with propane torch flame effects from an asphalt roofing tool.

“Ma’am: The Mammoth,” is a bicycle powered Mutant Vehicle or Art Car and was designed by Nick DeWolf and Harvie Branscomb, Aspen, Colorado. This group collaboration was built and rebuilt by many friends of the Ma’am, including Eric Ringsby, who served as all purpose volunteer and financial contributor. Although Eric is no longer involved with this project and Nick DeWolf has passed away, Harvie Branscomb and Yayoi Wakabayashi carry on the Ma’am legacy.
Nick DeWolf was born July 12, 1928 and died April 16, 2006 and was co-founder of computer testing giant Teradyne. It was my great privilege and honor to make art and experience Burning Man with Nick. Please see the above photo of the Mammoth mobile with Nick and crew of Piltdown people. In the “Piltdown Man” palentological hoax group photo, I’m wearing the big black Nevada Buckaroo hat! Perhaps I should note, Nick was inspired by the Piltdown Man, the false missing-link hoax and also the Columbian mammoth skeleton found in the Black Rock Desert, location of Burning Man, and can be seen in the Palentological Museum of Winnemucca.

Initial fabrication was in Cripple Creek, CO then moved to El Jebel, CO.

Toro!! is a major museum exhibition examining the importance of the Bull throughout history with more than 100 objects and two video presentations, one by Eric Ringsby, presented in four sections—early depictions and antiquities from the ancient Mediterranean region, Spanish bull fighting, bull riding in America, and modern and contemporary painting, prints and photographs. Picasso’s Minotaur Series and Goya’s Bull Fighting Series are featured. A fully illustrated catalog is in the works.

A major exhibition of Ringsby’s video projections and prints about Palestinian life and history from the Palestinian perspective. This particular exhibition proved to be enormously controversial and generated a huge response in local papers, radio and television. Ringsby was interviewed on local TV, public radio as well as participating in an on-going discussion in the Editorial pages of The Aspen Times and Aspen Daily News. Ringsby successfully defended himself alone against extremist tactics by five hardline Zionist groups based in Aspen who worked hard to shut down the exhibition, threatening the artist, gallery owner and critics.

Ringsby made an agit-prop political painting satirizing the Bush administration at the event and raised $400 for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
