Program Presently Discontinued

Enormous Wyoming vistas and rugged wilderness create the picturesque back drop to this one-of-a-kind landscape photography intensive. Participants will explore and photograph the sparsely populated big sky prairie of the Laramie Basin, to the alpine tundra in the peaks of Medicine Bow National Forest. The true Old West towns of Saratoga, Medicine Bow and Elk Mt, will also be part of your hands-on investigation of the Wyoming landscape. The emphasis of this course is on production and discussion of work. The instructors will concentrate on aesthetic and philosophical issues pertaining to photography in the field.

Horseback and hiking trips with a guide and instructor will guarantee an intimate insight into the area. The class will meet daily for field expeditions, instruction, critique and slide lectures. Although participants will work within a group atmosphere, there will be ample private time for those who want and need a serene and peaceful environment in which to create. After a day of shooting, on-site C-41 development and printing from 35mm film as well as contact printing/developing black and white film is available. Printing the work on-site allows the course to be taught through on-going slide critiques of the work.

The scenic Rafter Six Ranch Art Center is nestled at the base of the Snowy Range Mountains of Wyoming's Medicine Bow National Forest, near Laramie, in south-central Wyoming.

Daily Adventures You will have an active schedule that utilizes the wild and wonderful Medicine Bow National Forest. You can ride horseback on mountain trails. You can hike Medicine Bow Peak above Lac Marie or explore the Chaulk Cliffs (both pictured here). We guarantee great Western views for you to perfect your landscape photography skills. Back at the Ringsby Ranch you can horseback ride, flyfish or spincast the trout pond, use the Banya (a Siberian style log cabin sauna) play horseshoes, volleyball, badminton & croquet.

The Ranch is situated in a gorgeous location. Aspen trees and beaver ponds surround the houses. Ponderosa pines tower nearby. Wildlife abounds. The front pond teams with trout, as does nearby Diamond Lake. Large herds of antelope and elk wander by the houses. Mountain lions, moose, bobcats and bears frequent the ranch. Coyotes howl most every night.

Our Food is a high priority. Healthy generous meals are prepared daily with fresh locally harvested ingredients, our menu is varied and flexible. We are health and flavor conscious. Portions are generous. Wyoming barbecues are our specialty. You will eat well.
